Custodian Appreciation Day!

Gooood morning from the facilities building!

This morning, The RWU Random Acts of Kindness team got up bright and early to bring a random act of kindness to our silent heroes, the custodial team at RWU!

RWU Random Acts of Kindness teamed up with the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH)to conduct a 2-day custodian appreciation day March 1st and 2nd.
March 1st was spent in the Commons allowing students all over campus an opportunity to sign a "Custodian Appreciation Day" banner and write a little appreciation day message to the custodial staff here at RWU. We filled the banner by the end of the afternoon with notes and messages!
Today, the RWU RAOK team got up bright and early with NRHH to set up bagels, coffee and doughnuts to say a little "thanks" for all their hard work. We spent the morning eating breakfast, talking and hearing their excitement and appreciation from the campus for their efforts.

Random Acts of Kindness done by 7:30 am and some very appreciative custodial staff? I'd say so far, its been a productive day.

March 1st: Visit an Animal Shelter

Today's RWU Random Act of Kindness was to go visit an animal shelter, in particular, The Friends of Bristol Animal Shelter which is less than a mile from campus!

Visiting the animal shelter or donating cat or dog food can help the animal shelter in a large way, even though it is a small donation. Want to learn more about the benefits? Read this article: http://www.randomactsofkindness.org/Kindness-Ideas/Visit-an-Animal-Shelter.html

Here at RWU, we have multiple campus cats and students feed them throughout the academic year and volunteers from Bristol Animal Shelter feed while school is not in session. Kirstie Goodwin, a junior at RWU, has been feeding the campus cats for a few years. Each of them have a name, so the next time you're walking around campus and you see a kitty basking in the sunlight by MNS, smile and know it is well taken care of. Great job Kirstie for being kind to those who cannot speak to for themselves!

One random act of kindness can go a long way.

Our campaign has been in full swing since February 21st. If you haven't followed up with what we've been up to, have no fear! The RWUPRSSA campaign team is here! To start off, we are giving each day it's own specific random act of kindness (but feel free to do more than one of a different variety!). So far we have done these "random acts of kindness":

February 21: Read to a little kid
February 22: Ask to help
February 23: Recommend a classmate on LinkedIn
February 24: Hold the door for someone with a smile
February 25: Return your shopping cart
February 26: Do a chore for a friend, roommate, or sibling.
February 27: Recycle
February 28: Say "Good Morning" to a stranger

Not only have we been promoting specific random acts of kindness, we held a dinner in our "Upper Commons" to spread kindness. We set up a compliment booth where students could leave a compliment on the table to give to a random student or give a compliment to their friends. We ended up giving away over 150 compliments! Great job RWU! We also had a slideshow full of ideas that were random acts of kindness to give students the initiative to spread kindness to one another. We decorated the "Upper Commons" with red balloons and streamers to get students in the kind frame of mind!

Another event we held to spread awareness was our GHH attack! We wrote on the random act of kindness ideas on the white boards and put sticky notes with compliments and ideas all around classrooms and lounges where students regularly hang out! (pictures to come soon)

Our campaign has been going so well that the campus newspaper made it the front page news (top half too!). If you're interested in reading the article, check it out here: http://www.hawksherald.com/news/acts-of-benevolence-1.2016511

Wanna know what's coming next? Here is a list of our events:
March 1st - Co-sponsorship with NRHH "Janitor Appreciation Day", we will be giving the janitors free coffee, and presenting them with a banner that RWU students will have signed throughout the day
March 2nd - Musical Munchies with WQRI, we have teamed up with our radio station and will be handing out compliments and getting students responses to the campaign as the radio station puts on requests by students throughout lunch in the "Upper Commons"
March 3rd - Wear red for kindness, we are encouraging students to wear red to band together and spread kindness not only on campus but throughout the community! If a student isn't wearing red, our campaign team will be handing out free red beads!
March 4th - Table at the Lower Commons and Theatre of the Deaf, we will be handing out glow-in-the-dark frisbees with random act of kindness ideas written on them so students can give them to their friends or even toss the frisbee to someone they may not know! Later that night we are working with the Multicultural Student Union to appreciate deaf culture by bringing a group of deaf people who are famous for putting on one act plays and comedy shows; during the event, we will have a table set up with promotional items and someone who can answer questions about deaf culture so students can appreciate a new culture they do not know much about!
March 6th - Bay clean-up, dependent upon the weather, we are co-sponsoring a bay clean up community service afternoon with our Feinstein Service Learning Center to promote the idea of community service in the campus local community
March 7th - CEN Fortune Cookie Kindness, the Campus Entertainment Network and the campaign team are putting an event on so that students can write a personalized compliment that we will put in a fortune cookie to give to a friend or another student on campus
March 8th - Paint the campus red, there will be a scavenger hunt afoot on campus! Teams will have to complete random acts of kindness and take a picture of it to get a prize. The top two teams will get $25 iTunes gift certificates
March 9th - Popcorn on the Porch, the Feinstein Service Learning Center and the campaign team will be handing out popcorn to students with a smile, we will be telling students about the campaign and what they can do in the long-term to encourage a kinder environment at RWU!
March 10th - Balloon lift off, the PRSSA chapter and campaign team are launching 200 biodegradable balloons off into the sky, we hope that students from all around campus will be able to be there to launch a balloon to encourage kindness in the local community and on campus
March 11th - Compliment Booth, since the first compliment booth had such a astounding response we thought it would be a great idea to wrap up the campaign with what we started with: a simple compliment to make someone smile
